Almeria becomes home to largest self-consumption solar power plant in Spain
Cosentino construction materials company has launched its solar power plant in Almería, the largest self-consumption photovoltaic installation in Spain.
Mayor of Almería Ramón Fernández-Pacheco attended the launch of the solar farm worth EUR 14 million, noting that the project establishes a new model of renewable power management in the country.
Nearly 37,000 solar panels were installed on more than 32 hectares as part of the project which will generate roughly 34,000 MWh per year, or approximately 20% of the company’s local annual consumption.
Fernández-Pacheco visited Cosentino’s headquarters in Almería to attend the launch and learn about the company’s projects and innovative solutions. He thanked the company for its dedication and commitment to the local community.
The Mayor stressed that Cosentino “has established itself as an exemplary company, committed to circular economy and clean energy,” adding that the launch of the solar power plant shows its dedication.
Besides contributing to the green push, the project adds to industrial development and creates jobs.
Fernández-Pacheco pointed out that the company previously launched biodiversity projects and uses circular economy processes in production of construction materials.
The solar power project is part of Cosentino’s broader efforts to use more renewables in its power mix. The company is starting the second phase of its transition towards renewables in which it will install solar panels on the roofs of its production facilities.
The second phase will include installation of approximately 27,000 solar panels, cost roughly EUR 10 million and be launched by the end of next year.
