The Hungarian capital Budapest has decided to name the park next to Lake Feneketlen after famous actress Mari Törőcsik, who is also an honorary citizen of the city.

Törőcsik, who passed away last year, is one of the most famous Hungarian stage and film actresses who appeared in over 170 movies. At the 1976 Cannes Film Festival, she received the Best Actress prize for the movie Mrs. Dery Where Are You?

Mayor of Budapest Gergely Karácsony stated on social media that Mari Törcsik was a pivotal figure in Hungarian theater and film culture for more than half a century. She was able to demonstrate her talent not only to Hungarian but also to international audiences at the Körhinthe in 1955, when she was only 20 years old.

In 2005, Mari Törőcsik also received honorary Budapest citizenship. According to the proposal of the Municipality of Újbuda, District XI, this title allowed for a public area in the city to be named after her in the year following her death.

Mayor Karácsony stated: ‘’We continue to work to have more public spaces named after women, in February we inaugurated Solt Ottilia Square in District II, last year we added Magda Szabó’s Promenade and Irén Psota Street to Budapest, and Komlós Juci Street was added to the map.’’

When it comes to street names in major cities in Europe and across the world, women remain largely unrepresented. Naming more streets after women is a great way to highlight their accomplishments, promote equality and recognize the important role they had in shaping cities of today.
