Sweden’s Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson visited the country’s third-largest city Malmö yesterday. Anderson, who is also Sweden’s first female prime minister, was welcomed by the mayor of Malmö Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh.

Mayor Stjernfeldt Jammeh stated on social media: ‘’It certainly felt a bit historic when Sweden’s first female prime minister visited Malmö today. Nice reception by both students and staff at Mellersta Förstadsskolan.’’

‘’Many good questions and a clear desire from many for a school system that puts the needs and rights of children before those of the market. Valuable feedback also on how the school is working with more reading and language development and to motivate and engage and meet all students,’’ she continued.

Prime Minister Anderson also visited a local organization Yalla-trappan which is doing very important work in this Swedish city. It is a work-integrating social enterprise run by a non-profit association in  Malmö’s city district Rosengård, which aims to create jobs and increase financial security and independence particularly to women with a migration background.

Yalla Trappan employs over 35 employees and also hires trainees for work experience in different business areas such as café and catering services, cleaning, conference services, and sewing. During her visit to the southern Swedish city, the Prime Minister also met the members of Malmö police.

‘’During the lunch, the Prime Minister also met with the Malmö police, who explained how we have developed our local efforts to combat serious violence and how we work to prevent young people from getting into trouble,’’ mayor of Malmö Stjernfeldt Jammeh also stated.

The Uppsala-born politician has been serving as Sweden’s Prime Minister since November 30th last year. Her election marked a historical moment in a country that is generally seen as a bright example of female representation in politics. Before becoming a prime minister, Andersson also served as a Minister of Finance since October 2014. (photo credit: Branko Besevic/Unsplash)
