Essen chose their athletes of the year
Essen’s athletes of 2020 have been chosen. The sports forum of the Sparkasse Essen took place on the usual location in Sparkasse headquarters on Kennedyplatz, but for the first time, the format, including a panel discussion, was not hosted with guests on site, but as a live stream on the Internet.
Lord Mayor of Essen Thomas Kufen, said: “Due to the corona pandemic, the past year was a very special challenge for the athletes and others involved in the sports, such as trainers and supervisors, but despite the restrictions, the sporting year 2020 was rich with special achievements that will be honored tonight.”
Lord Mayor Kufen named the DFB Cup final in women’s football (match between VfL Wolfsburg and SGS Essen) as his personal sports highlight of 2020: “It was a really gripping and dramatic final in which SGS Essen ultimately had to admit defeat on penalties. All in all, an outstanding performance – unfortunately, the last bit of luck was missing in the end.”
In conclusion, the Lord Mayor emphasized that sports in general and the top athletes in Essen have made an important contribution to cohesion and togetherness in urban society in 2020.
