The Mayor of Nantes and President of Nantes Métropole Johanna Rolland affirmed on the launch of Nantes Digital Week: “In Nantes, we have been making progress for a long time with this ambition and this requirement: the digital transition must not be the source of new divisions and new inequalities”.

In professional and private life, the use of the Internet is becoming more and more essential, particularly for administrative procedures. However, according to official statistics, nearly 15% of French people over 15 do not use the web and 38% of users lack at least one basic digital skill. Age, social background, lack of skills, or even equipment are all factors that explain this famous “digital divide”.

To reduce these present inequalities Nantes Métropole, in partnership with the Loire-Atlantique department, will carry out an experiment for a year by providing digital passes. From November, 2,000 vouchers of 5 pass worth € 10 will be distributed to 2,000 residents of the metropolis with digital disabilities through the communal social action center (CCAS).

“The vouchers will make it possible to pay for various services such as how to learn to configure a mailbox or a printer, write a CV, or fill out administrative papers. Today this knowledge is essential and greatly facilitates daily life,” explains Grégoire Barbot, project manager at the PiNG association. We want to participate in this experiment because we are convinced that this small financial surcharge will greatly encourage those who need it to train in digital technology.”
