Valladolid has launched a new public bicycle service – BIKI – as part of its efforts to promote sustainable and electric mobility.

Mayor of Valladolid Óscar Puente presented the project with city officials, noting that the service was made available on 1 February in all neighbourhoods.

BIKI public bicycle rental system offers nearly 1,000 bicycles, of which 238 are electric, with city authorities pointing out that the system is managed directly by the city council. The city noted that users can pick up and drop off bicycles at 97 points across Valladolid.

Puente expressed belief that “BIKI will be a cornerstone of mobility in Valladolid… and help to improve quality of life in the city.” He pointed out that it will make the city a healthier place to live as well as more efficient and sustainable.

City authorities reminded that implementation of the plan did not require large-scale works that would inconvenience the residents and reiterated that the service is now available in all parts of Valladolid.

The project is largely financed through EU funds and part of the city’s strategy for promotion of sustainable mobility, with city authorities pointing out that the bicycles are made from recycled aluminium.

The service is available through subscription and pay-per-use models, with half-hourly rate of EUR 0.25 for mechanical bicycles and up to 0.75 for electric ones.
