Toulon implementing landslide and rockfall prevention project
Toulon announced coming phases of the project aimed at preventing landslides and rockfalls from the Mont Faron.
The city launched the project under Mayor of Toulon Hubert Falco in 2020, noting that implementation will take approximately 15 years.
Toulon is carrying out extensive work on Mont Faron to secure the surrounding urban area. The city secured nine sectors thus far and is preparing to launch five projects in 2023.
It launched an impact study in 2007 to prepare risk prevention plans and draw up measures aimed at minimising negative effects on the urban area as well as local flora and fauna.
City authorities stressed that the plan includes passive and active measures to stabilise rock masses while protecting habitats and biodiversity.
Work on some sectors is expected to last up to several years, depending on specifics of the sites and complexity of work.
Toulon reminded that it launched environmental monitoring of the area in 2021, which will last 35 years and track the impact of projects on local wildlife.
Before launching the project, Toulon installed instrumentation in 2005 to monitor stability of Mont Faron. The system alerts relevant authorities if triggered, which helps them to assess risks and respond to incidents.
City authorities concluded that, as part of work in some sectors, some residents will have to be evacuated for safety reasons.
