Sofia has launched two new social programmes to support vulnerable groups at the suggestion of Mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova.

The first new programme, the Centre for Public Support, will help children victims of violence and their families. It will provide a safe space for 80 people and is to open at the start of December.

As part of the programme, a multidisciplinary team will care for the children, with Sofia authorities pointing out that the team will comprise experts from relevant institutions.

Children and their families will receive medical consultation and psychological counselling from specialists as well as legal counselling and representation.

City authorities pointed out that the programme will be implemented in cooperation with UNICEF, charities and NGOs, adding that it will be open to children who have suffered or witnessed violence.

Sofia stressed that the programme is set up to be sustainable to ensure continued support for the most vulnerable.

The second new programme focuses on providing help to adults with disabilities, with a special focus on people with addiction.

It will provide therapy, rehabilitation, training, day care and more, with city authorities stressing that it will be available to adults addicted to alcohol and other psychoactive substances.

The programme is aimed at helping addicts to overcome social isolation by developing skills and forming positive habits.
