Rotterdam on track to halve raw material consumption by 2030 with new Upcycle Mall
Rotterdam has started building the Upcycle Mall recycling park, noting that it is to be completed before the summer of 2024.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb pointed out that recycled materials are used in construction of the park.
Residents will be able to drop off their recyclables and items suitable for reuse as the Upcycle Mall will house circular economy shops where waste will be transformed into new items.
Rotterdam pointed out that the park will be open to visits from schools as well as offer internship and training spots for students.
City authorities reminded that the Upcycle Mall was originally set up in Delft, but was dismantled last year and started the move to Rotterdam.
The city plans to halve its consumption of raw materials by 2030, noting that the civil engineering sector generates 60% of waste in Rotterdam.
Implementation of circular economy principles can help to reduce waste and consumption of raw materials by making full use of all available resources.
City authorities noted that a new name for the Upcycle Mall will be chosen later this year in consultation with residents and called on them to drop off their recyclables and bulky waste at recycling centres.
Rotterdam concluded that implementation of circular economy projects will help the city to reach environmental targets.
