Rijeka is taking steps towards electrification of its bus fleet
Mayor of Rijeka Marko Filipovic attended the presentation of MAN Lion’s City 12E electric bus, which was held as part of MAN’s European tour #ElectrifyingEurope.
Mayor Filipovic stated on social media: ‘’Such vehicles tell a more sustainable story in the long run, and the European Green Plan as well as strategic development documents envisage a complete transition to electric buses by 2050.’’
According to the official website of the city of Rijeka, the MAN Lion’s City 12E is a 12-meter low-floor city bus, with a capacity of up to 88 passengers. Because electric buses are not fueled by fossil fuels but rather by renewable sources, they can play a significant role in cities’ green transition.
Zvonko Gabud, director of bus sales at MAN Importer Croatia, explained that the public transportation system is entering a new phase, oriented toward zero-emission vehicles. This is the result of a growing focus on ecology and cleaner air, as well as stricter European standards for public transportation vehicles.
‘’We expect 37 new buses for the Autotrolej fleet in Rijeka this year, but we will certainly study the possibilities of financing such buses with European funds and explore their possibilities when it comes to the configuration of the terrain of the city of Rijeka’’, mayor Filipovic further stated.
Numerous European cities have recently announced adding more electric buses to their fleets. In the Italian city of Genoa, new electric buses will soon be buzzing through the streets. The introduction of new buses, according to the mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci, will be a key step toward electrifying the city’s public transit system. (photo credit: pch vector/Freepik)
