Following last year’s success, the Romanian capital Bucharest is organising another edition of the “Open Streets” event, which will turn several boulevards and streets in the city into pedestrian-only zones on weekends between April 30 and October 16.

Mayor of Bucharest Nicușor Dan stated on social media: ‘’Because the initiative launched last year was well received by the people of Bucharest, we decided to expand the event in 2022 by increasing the number of streets involved in the project and by organizing several cultural events – street theater, jazz concerts, children’s workshops, etc.’’

Bucharest’s University Square, George Enescu Square, and parts of Unirii Boulevard will all become pedestrian zones on the weekends in the upcoming months, in addition to Calea Victoriei and Șoseaua Kiseleff.

‘’We discussed these things on Wednesday at ARCUB – Gabroveni Inn, where we had a working meeting with festival organizers, independent cultural operators and HoReCa entrepreneurs, as well as with representatives of the sector city halls, finalizing the last details of the project that will take place on weekends in the capital from April 30 to October 16,’’ mayor Dan further stated.

‘’At Wednesday’s meeting we also agreed to produce a guide of recommendations for traders taking part in the “Open Streets” event, regulating the location of terraces, noise levels, cleanliness,’’ mayor of Bucharest continued.

According to the mayor of Bucharest Nicușor Dan, the city needs to properly define its public spaces, which is why it is now determined to map them based on the types of events they may host, including cultural, sporting, and musical events.
