Montpellier is planning to plant 50,000 trees by 2026 as part of its environmental efforts.

Headed by Mayor of Montpellier Michaël Delafosse, the city stressed the importance of planting new trees in public spaces.

The plan to make the city greener focuses on the creation of new green areas and planting additional trees in existing green areas, with city authorities noting that a map is available online that shows the progress of planting efforts since the autumn of 2020.

Montpellier pointed out that trees play many important roles in cities, including as carbon sinks, air purifiers, surface runoff and humidity regulators and more. In addition, large green areas in cities help to limit the heat island effect and prevent soil erosion.

Besides providing benefits to the residents and improving quality of live in the city, expansion of green areas will provide habitat and food for wildlife, which will help to protect and increase biodiversity.

City authorities pointed out that many different species have been and will be planted to improve biodiversity and make Montpellier’s green areas more resilient to diseases and effects of climate change.

Montpellier stressed that young trees produced through natural regeneration in green areas will be identified and protected, adding that local species will be allowed to colonise and enrich the newly planted areas, which will help to attract local wildlife and add to natural regeneration.
