First stage in the revegetation of Place de la Comédie in Montpellier
Michaël Delafosse, Mayor of Montpellier, launched the first stage of revegetation of the Place de la Comédie with the installation of 29 trees and shrubs in tanks.
Contributing to making the living environment more beautiful and bringing nature to the city is one of the priorities of Michaël Delafosse’s mandate. This is why the City of Montpellier is starting to revegetate the Place de la Comédie replacing the blue concrete blocks. The purpose of this approach is to promote the development of nature and biodiversity in the city, while respecting safety and improving the conviviality of the place.
This first step in the process of embellishing the Place de la Comédie includes the installation of 29 large metal containers measuring 1.80 m on each side and 80 cm high in anthracite gray. The trees selected are “Japanese privets”, surrounded by “ground cover” plants whose flowering is predominantly white. In streets rue de Maguelone and rue de la Loge, shrubs will be planted in order to maintain the clear view.
The development will be carried out gradually and the amount of this investment is 260,000 euros.

The second stage will be supported with additional trees in containers beyond the replacement of blue blocks. It will be followed by a third and final phase with the development of trees on the ground in pits or in the ground. Gradually, Montpellier will become a greener and more resilient city.
“The greening of Montpellier is one of our main campaign measures and we have started in the heart of the city: the Comédie. Greening our cities is one of the most effective and appropriate solutions to fight against global warming. It is also a desire to re-embellish the emblematic square of the city and the metropolis” underlines Michaël Delafosse, Mayor of Montpellier, President of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole.
