Mayor of Padua Sergio Giordani announced that the works on a new green square in an area which has previously been neglected will start shortly after the summer.

Mayor Giordani stated on social media: ‘’It was an area, the one in front of the Church of San Carlo all’Arcella, abandoned and forgotten for some time. Now, thanks to a total investment of 1.5 million euro, it will become a large tree-lined square by 2023. The works will start immediately after the summer.’’

‘’A park with cycle and pedestrian paths and services for citizens, an intervention that is part of the larger framework of the redevelopment of Piazza Azzurri d’Italia after the acquisition of the ‘ex Coni’ building, which will become a large cultural centre, and the recovery of the Configliachi, thanks to the national and European funding we obtained,’’ Mayor Giordani continued.

Urban areas need green spaces in order to protect the health and wellbeing of their residents and to combat climate change. Moreover, increasing the amount of greenery in cities is an efficient method to enhance air quality naturally.

To keep the city healthy and livable, a well-planned and managed green infrastructure network is critical. Recently, Padua has also been selected together with eight Italian cities to take part in the European Commission’s Cities Mission for 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. The project’s goal is to turn the selected cities into innovation hubs, with the main objective of making all EU cities climate-neutral by 2050.
