Marseille steps up support for single-parent families

Marseille is stepping up support for single-parent families, stressing the importance of protecting the most vulnerable groups.

Headed by Mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan, city authorities pointed out that the increase in funding of more than EUR 1 million to the Communal Centre for Social Action (CCAS) will help the centre to provide more aid.

The aid will come in the form of personalised support checks to the most vulnerable families in Marseille.

The city provided CCAS with a grant of EUR 203,400 at the end of 2022 to help it expand its aid programme, noting that allocation per beneficiary will stand between EUR 200 and 500, depending on their specific circumstances.

Marseille invited families to submit requests for assistance online or by mail, stressing that the programme will help them to cover expenses related to their basic needs.

City authorities pointed out that it strengthened CCAS in cooperation with the state, which will help in the fight against poverty in the municipality.

The latest move is a part of Marseille’s efforts aimed at identifying and providing support to families in need and reinforces the city’s solidarity policies already in place.

Last year, CCAS provided aid worth nearly EUR 475,000 in the form of food vouchers, up roughly 68% compared to 2021. Marseille noted that it increased spending on social programmes from EUR 14.8 million in 2022 to 17.1 million in 2023.
