Linköping pioneers AI in traffic and mobility planning

Linköping is using AI to analyse travel patterns of residents to improve mobility and streamline traffic in the city.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Linköping Lars Vikinge stressed the importance of adjusting traffic to work as well as possible for all residents and vehicle types.

Linköping reminded that its mobility strategy focuses on maximising efficiency, safety and speed while minimising negative environmental effects.

Councillor Stefan Erikson pointed out “the purpose of the municipality’s traffic planning work is to facilitate and improve all types of traffic.”

He noted that the city wants to develop public transport and make it easier to travel around the city on a bicycle, adding “we also want to make the inner city more accessible to those who have a car as the only reasonable alternative.”

Linköping is collecting data on travel and feeding it to an AI which analyses the data and identifies critical areas where mobility can be improved.

The move will help city authorities to understand the needs of residents and make better investments in mobility.

City authorities reminded that Linköping has been testing self-driving buses for three years, with more than 11,000 passengers served. The city is planning to increase the number of stops and routes as well as examining the possibility of using self-driving vehicles for logistical purposes.
