Linköping plans to up hydropower production if needed

Linköping is planning to increase hydropower production if needed to shore up power supply through the winter.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Linköping Lars Vikinge pointed out that the energy situation in parts of southern Sweden is difficult, which is why the municipal utility Tekniska Verken is preparing to produce more electricity than usual in the winter months.

Ola Palmquist, a business unit manager at the utility, pointed out that the company is thinking a little differently this year.

“In order to do what we can to reduce the risk of electricity shortages and, by extension, work to keep down the already high electricity price, we will produce more electricity that we would normally have done,” Palmquist noted.

This approach entails a risk of lower water levels in accumulation lakes this year, with the company pointing out that additional production will take place until March.

The utility stressed that it is difficult to predict how much additional electricity it will produce as this will depend on consumption, trends on the energy market and precipitation during the winter, among other.

It noted that water levels in lakes are relatively low compared to other years, largely due to comparatively low rainfall in recent months, and reminded that the utility usually maintains high water levels in the winter in preparation for the summer, when many people spend time on or by lakes.
