Liège pointed out that its climate plan includes the planting of 24,000 trees by 2030.

Under Mayor of Liège Willy Demeyer, the city stressed the importance of conserving nature in general and trees in particular, pointing out that planting more trees will help to fight against the urban heat island effect.

Liège noted that the tree-planting plan is part of broader efforts to make the city greener and more resilient by 2050 while improving quality of life.

The city’s 2030 goal includes lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 55% through measures that will be drawn up in scientific and pragmatic manner.

The city pointed out that it adopted a directive earlier in December to set the minimum rate of revegetation required for new construction in Liège.

It stressed the importance of aligning urban projects with environmental goals and pointed out that this is in the interest of the residents.

The plan has three areas of focus – conservation of existing trees, planting of new trees to replace ones that will be removed and overall increase in the number of trees in the city.

All new projects will have to be in line with locally-set green area ratios, with Liège authorities stressing that neighbourhoods will have different ratios depending on a number of factors.

City authorities concluded that the new environmental plan will provide guidelines for urban development and help investors to align their projects with the green push.
