Liège expands its winter shelter programme to provide everyone with warm place to stay
Liège has expanded its winter shelter programme to provide the homeless with a warm place to stay through the winter season.
Under Mayor of Liège Willy Demeyer, the city stressed the importance of providing all homeless people a place to stay, eat and sleep.
City authorities reminded that the Mayor has to make sure no one is left in the street during the coldest part of the year, adding that relevant bodies are keeping a close eye on developments and will react as needed.
Under the programme, Liège provides accommodation to the homeless around the clock, stressing the importance of ensuring a dignified and welcoming environment.
Public and private entities are working together and coordinating their efforts to achieve this objective.
Liège pointed out that efforts are aimed at providing as much accommodation as possible while taking into account health constraints, stressing that the planned opening of a new shelter will bring the number of available beds to 100.
The large night shelter has 30 beds, the smaller “Thermos” shelter has 26, additional 19 beds are available in the Seraing shelter and reception centres combined, and the new shelter will add 25.
The city is prepared to increase the total number of available beds to 115 during periods of “extreme cold.” Besides expanding shelter capacities, Liège hired six additional educators and 3 social workers to ensure proper management and operation of shelters.
