Homeless families in Bilbao get a second chance with pilot project

News

Bilbao has reported on the progress of its pilot project for homeless families launched in May 2022.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Bilbao Juan Mari Aburto pointed out that the project is aimed at providing accommodation to families with dependent minors who have lost their home.

The city’s residence for homeless families has 10 rooms and common areas including bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. It has welcomed 12 families, a total of 32 people, since the launch of the pilot project last year.

Aburto has visited the residence this year to learn about its operation and the intervention model that is offered to the 7 families that currently live there.

Besides offering temporary housing, the pilot project includes measures aimed at helping families to address underlying problems and access other types of housing.

City authorities pointed out that the measures are focused on providing security and time to recover, develop skills, regain self-esteem and confidence, and help families to become independent.

Besides the residence, Bilbao offers hotel accommodation in emergency situations, to people who were evicted or forced to leave their homes.

City authorities noted that the residence is more suitable for families with minors, which helps families get back on their feet faster.
