Genoa Mayor inaugurates new Gavoglio Park after recovery project finishes
Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci has inaugurated the new Gavoglio Park, noting that the project has returned a long-forgotten area to the citizens.
“It is a historic day for Genoa, the result of a demanding and ambitious work that gives back to all the Genoese an urban space that has been abandoned for more than 40 years,” he stressed.
Bucci noted that the park is a new green area near the city centre and stressed that city authorities tailored the project to meet the needs of all residents.
“The goal was not only to recover the historical heritage, but to carry out a redevelopment operation that could bring benefits and new services to the neighbourhood,” he added and thanked everyone who made the project possible.
City authorities reminded that the state made the abandoned Gavoglio barracks available to local authorities, after which Genoa launched a consultation process to involve residents in planning.
The project was co-financed through EU funds and is largely environmental in character, with Genoa pointing out that it focuses on mitigation of pollution and protection of biodiversity, among other.
City authorities pointed out that the project boasts a green irrigation system, adding that slopes in the park were stabilised with live chestnut pilings and noting that new pedestrian and cycling paths have been connected to existing infrastructure.
Deputy Mayor Pietro Piciocchi concluded that environmentally friendly solutions implemented as part of the project will help Genoa to become more resilient to “extreme events due to climate change.”
