Genoa held the “Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030” conference organised in collaboration with the European Commission.

Mayor of Genoa Marco Bucci pointed out that cities are working together to protect oceans and added that the EU Mission Charter “was created to build a new way of relating to the sea and water.”

He added that port cities have a duty to protect oceans and concluded that Genoa is working to become an example of successful implementation of the charter.

The Agenda of Mayors was presented at the conference to coordinate efforts of local authorities and help them to collaborate on the environmental transition.

Genoa stressed the importance of protecting oceans and noted that maritime transport must be redeveloped to include zero emission requirements.

MEP Marco Campomenosi stated that the EU’s ecological transition push started “from the bottom up, from local authorities to Europe.”

The EC launched its Oceans and Waters Mission last year with the aim of guiding protection efforts and maintaining the health of oceans, seas and freshwater basins.

Genoa joined the EC’s Mission in the second half of 2022, stressing the importance of protecting the Mediterranean and keeping it in good shape for future generations.

City authorities pointed out that the Mediterranean Sea accounts for roughly 25% of commercial and 60% of tourist traffic.
