Dresden’s Südpark gets a new forest playground, co-designed by children

Dresden has opened a new forest playground in Südpark, pointing out that the area was designed in line with children’s proposals.

Headed by Lord Mayor of Dresden Dirk Hilbert, city authorities pointed out that planning and implementation of the project cost roughly EUR 400,000.

Councillor Eva Jähnigen opened the playground and described it as “a place for adventure, fun and experiences in nature,” noting that the central feature is an eight-metre wooden play tower.

“Those brave enough to climb to the top will be rewarded with two slides that lead back down,” she added and expressed hope that the new playground will not be damaged by vandalism.

City authorities pointed out that the playground was designed to blend into the forest, with the lion’s share of playground equipment made of wood and many trees and bushes replanted.

Landscape architect Matthias Mohring designed the playground, Naturholz Kästner equipment manufacturer won the competition to supply playground equipment and Natur & Stein construction company built the playground.

City authorities reminded that construction projects in Südpark are challenging as the area was used for mining clay at the end of the last century and the pits were later filled with rubble and waste.

The area needed to be decontaminated and stabilised to anchor the play tower and make the playground safe.
