Dresden has launched its Climate Protection and Energy Transition Office at the start of 2023.

City authorities headed by Lord Mayor of Dresden Dirk Hilbert pointed out that the new body is part of the Urban Development, Construction, Transport and Real Estate Department.

Head of the department Stephan Kühn noted that the new office will be in charge of development and implementation of the Solar Panel Offensive and added that it will report directly to him.

“In the Climate Protection and Energy Transition Office, we bundle the expertise of our employees and increase our resilience to climate and energy crises,” he pointed out.

Kühn stressed the importance of solar panels in Dresden’s energy transition and noted “as one of the first tasks, the department will develop a concept for the development of solar potential on municipal buildings and explore further potential in the entire city.”

City authorities pointed out that solar panels can be installed on day-care centres, schools, sports facilities, administration buildings and other municipal real estate, stressing that Dresden wants to increase the share of solar power in its energy mix.

In addition, large roof areas can be leased to third parties to invest in solar power generation, with public garages and open spaces offering further possibilities.

“In order to promote the expansion of photovoltaic systems, the next step will be to identify suitable roof and facade surfaces, determine investment costs and present an implementation strategy,” Kühn concluded.
