De Mirandabad outdoor pool gets a green makeover in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has announced plans to modernise the De Mirandabad outdoor pool and make it more sustainable.

City authorities headed by Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema pointed out that the old pool is in poor condition and needs to be replaced.

As part of efforts to make the pool more sustainable, it will no longer be heated using natural gas.

The project is to start this summer and be completed in time for the opening of the outdoor pool season 2024, with city authorities noting that other pools in the complex will remain open this summer.

Amsterdam authorities reminded that the old swimming pool complex will be modernised gradually to prepare it for the future and make it more sustainable, stressing that the 50-metre outdoor pool will be renovated first.

The concrete tank is too damaged to be repaired and installations need to be modernised to switch from natural gas to renewable energy.

City authorities noted that greenery in the area will remain intact as much as possible, with all trees to remain standing and other vegetation to be restored after the construction phase is completed.

Besides rebuilding the pool and relevant installations, Amsterdam will construct additional facilities in the complex, reiterating that the project is to be completed in approximately one year.

City authorities pointed out that the project will not have negative effects on accessibility.
