Charleroi presents student housing programme as part of its university development plans
Charleroi presented a student housing programme as part of its plans for university development and integration into the UNESCO Learning Cities network.
Under Mayor of Charleroi Paul Magnette, the city pointed out that the current housing model offers few quality control options, which is why the city administration decided to launch the programme.
Alderwoman for housing Laurence Leclercq stressed that the programme introduces the “C Mon Kot” label to guarantee housing standards, including sanitation, internet connection, security, access to public transport and more.
As part of the plan, city authorities will establish a register of properties to help potential tenants and offer visibility to owners, with Charleroi stressing that participation will be voluntary.
To obtain the label for their properties, owners will have to submit applications to housing authorities, after which inspectors will rate their accommodation and city authorities will decide whether to grant the label.
Owners whose properties receive the label will get signs to install on buildings to show their certification. The properties will be listed on the city’s website and relayed by partner universities, which will help potential tenants to find them.
The programme will also offer “C Mon Kot +” certification for properties suitable for disabled students. City authorities pointed out that the UCharleroi campus will accommodate approximately 10,000 students, which is why attention needs to be paid to housing.
