Charleroi invests in modern and eco-friendly schools
Charleroi continues to invest in energy efficiency of schools as part of its broader programme of modernisation of municipal buildings.
Headed by Mayor of Charleroi Paul Magnette, city authorities pointed out that the energy efficiency project in Marcinelle district has been completed recently.
This follows the renovation of ECEPS, CECS Couillet and Cobaux schools, with Charleroi pointing out that the energy renovation programme is worth approximately EUR 12 million per year and part of Charleroi’s multiannual investment plan for the period between 2019 and 2024.
According to estimates, the latest project in Marcinelle will help Charleroi to save more than 7,000 kWh of electricity and 280,000 kWh of natural gas per year, which will cut annual CO2 emissions by roughly 74 tonnes.
City authorities pointed out that the exterior of the school was preserved as part of Charleroi’s architectural heritage, noting that the building was insulated from the inside. Buildings that are not as architecturally interesting have been insulated from the outside.
Councillor Julie Patte noted that, besides improving energy efficiency, the programme makes municipal buildings more accessible and comfortable.
She added that pupils will benefit from improved learning conditions and concluded that she is happy to see the pupils and teachers in fully renovated schools.
