Charleroi launches Brussels South Charleroi BioPark project
Charleroi has launched the Brussels South Charleroi BioPark project, starting construction of the Biotech 5 complex at the heart of the BioPark.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Charleroi Paul Magnette pointed out that the BioPark will include the EU Biotech Campus, a business accelerator financed through EU funds.
Charleroi noted that the EU Biotech Campus will make the BioPark more attractive by providing new infrastructure, creating conditions for growth of companies and hosting a training centre, among other.
The Biotech 5 complex will boast laboratories, offices, training rooms and shared spaces on nearly 25,000 square metres, of which laboratories will account for more than 10,000 and offices for more than 7,000. The complex will also have an underground car park.
City authorities reminded that the BioPark strategy for the period between 2018 and 2025 includes expansion of capacities between 20,000 and 30,000 square metres.
In 2018, the government of Wallonia approved investments of EUR 35 million in BioPark infrastructure, stressing the importance of the biotechnology sector for the local economy.
Charleroi pointed out that the EU Biotech Campus will specialise in development of talents to support growth of the biotechnology sector. In the last 10 years or so, employment in the sector has increased approximately 35% and exceeded 17,000 in 2021.
