Bucharest public transport is becoming more environmentally friendly
The Romanian capital Bucharest has the largest transport network in the country and the fourth largest one in Europe. Besides the surface transport network, Bucharest has five metro lines which cover a total of 78 km. The surface network consists of buses, trolleybuses, trams and light rail.
Bucharest has 23 tram lines in total and 67% of the tram infrastructure had been modernised by 2018, but the tram fleet tram is mostly made up of trams manufactured before 1990. The fleet utilisation rate during workdays is approximately 55.6%. The city has purchased 100 new trams from the Romanian manufacturer Astra Vagoane Călători Arad, which will be delivered in June, two months before the agreed deadline which was scheduled for August.
Mayor of Bucharest Nicușor Dan has visited the company and stated on social media: “I’m glad to be in Arad, inside a Romanian plant that will manufacture trams for Bucharest. As you know, we have a contract with Astra Arad for 100 36-meter trams. The ones you see here are the first six of this contract. According to the contract, the first tram should have been delivered in August 2022, but the director surprised us and told us that we could have the first tram in this series around June 1″.
The new trams will be fully adapted for people with disabilities, but will also allow travelers to transport their bikes.
This is another major step that the city is taking on their journey towards sustainable and environmentally friendly public transport. Mayor of Bucharest also announced that the City will purchase 100 trolleybuses and 100 electric buses.
