Bucharest: 200 buildings with highest seismic risk are being examined

News

Mayor of Bucharest Nicusor Dan has recently announced the start of expert research of 200 buildings which are endangered from seismic activity. This program is a joint effort of the City Council, mayor of Bucharest and several other organs of local administration.

Mayor Dan stated: “Through the Municipal Administration for the Consolidation of Buildings with Seismic Risk, we launched a program that provides the expertise for over 200 buildings”. The basic works started on five of these buildings during the last few week. These buildings are located at Bulevardul Magheru no. 16-18, Pache Protopopescu Boulevard no. 21, Hristo Botev Boulevard no. 26, Vasile Lascăr street no. 6 and Radu Cristian street no. 1.

There are plans to expand this first stage to another 20 buildings in the following weeks, primarily in the city center, but also in districts Berceni and Militari.

The expert research presents the first and most important step in the process of consolidation for the buildings. The next stage will consist of solution development and design of consolidation work.

The basis for this project was set during creation and ratification of the Framework Agreement. This regulation enabled local administration to start this project on 500,000 m² of real estates. Out of these 200 buildings, 160 of them are part of historical heritage.

The 160 buildings are composed of 350,000m². This number puts the Framework Agreement as the biggest technical expertise project over the last 20 years. The other 40 buildings are included in this project for their business and economic value.

After the initial research, the design will be created and submitted to Municipal Administration for the Consolidation of Buildings with Seismic Risk. At the end, this government body will decide which actions should be implemented and in which order. All of these actions need to be in-line with the City Council budget, since it is the only fund currently available for this project. (photo credit: Mihai Surdu/Pixabay)
