Bilbao has opened a new youth centre in the Basurto neighbourhood to meet the needs of young people between 12 and 30 years of age.

Mayor of Bilbao Juan María Aburto attended the inauguration ceremony with local officials, noting that the youth centre will be used for a variety of socio-cultural events.

He pointed out that the city is implementing “a comprehensive project of social innovation in youth policies, which is at the forefront of Europe and which pays special attention to three strategic areas: information and guidance, emancipation and innovation.”

City authorities noted that Bilbao is cooperating with the Basque government to pursue objectives set out in new youth regulations adopted earlier this year.

The youth centre will provide a space for youth to gather and organise events, with Bilbao authorities to provide guidance and supervision while encouraging development of skills and competencies.

Besides serving youth, the new centre will also host socio-cultural events for the general public.

Aburto noted that the new youth centre “comes alive and does so with its own renewed character, which will energise the Basurto neighbourhood, becoming a point of interest for young people from all over Bilbao and for citizens in general, with activities related to new technologies, culture, art, creativity and design, among other.”
