Rafał Trzaskowski
Biography
Rafał Trzaskowski is a Polish politician and mayor of Warsaw since 2018. Before becoming the mayor, he served as a Member of the European Parliament (2009–2013), Minister of Administration and Digitization (2013–2014) as well as the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland (2014–2015). He was also elected a Member of the Polish Parliament in 2015.
Born in Warsaw in 1972, Trzaskowski gained degrees at various universities. He obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Warsaw, Faculty of Journalism and Political Science in International Economics and Political Relations, and a Master’s degree from the European College in European Studies. Later on, mayor of Warsaw obtained his Ph.D. in Humanities in the field of political sciences from the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences from the University of Warsaw.
When he took over the mayor's office, Trzaskowski was very focused on issues related to foreign affairs, European policy, defense and the protection of civil and minority rights. Furthermore, at the beginning of his mayoral term, mayor Trzaskowski introduced a free nursery program and upgraded the city’s public transport by buying greener vehicles which showed his deep care about the environment.
Trzaskowski gained additional popularity when he signed a declaration of support for the LGBT community. This document focuses on five pillars to make Polish society more inclusive and safer for the LGBT community: safety, education, culture and sports, workplace, and administration.
Mayor of Warsaw is very dedicated to turning the city into a fully sustainable one. Many projects which transformed the city and made it greener have already been done: from the decarbonization of public transport to greening urban spaces and making Warsaw's buildings more energy efficient.
He is also trying to ensure that the path towards the city's climate neutrality is inclusive and socially fair which is why he is highly engaged in EU politics, and his climate action commitments go well beyond Polish borders.
One of his main plans is to make the city of Warsaw climate neutral by 2050. Urban greenery plays a huge role in mitigating and adapting to climate change, but it also helps tackle air pollution and to give a better quality of life for residents. (photo credit: wikipedia)
