Biography
Michael Ludwig is an Austrian politician who has been serving as mayor of Vienna since May 2018. Prior to becoming mayor, Michael Ludwig obtained the function of City Councillor for Housing, Construction, and Urban Renewal. He was born on April 3, 1961 and holds a degree in political sciences and history from the University of Vienna.
For 10 years in a row. Vienna has topped Mercer’s annual quality of living rankings as the world’s most liveable city. This is certainly one of the reasons why many international organizations including UN, OPEC, the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the World Wide Fund for Nature, have chosen the city of Vienna as their headquarters. This contributed to turning Vienna into a key player for the promotion of peace, security, and sustainable development.
Under Ludwig's mayoral term, the city is becoming the capital for digitization. Vienna was one of the first cities to put the real 5G network into operation in the federal capital which led to the further expansion of the city's infrastructure.
Michael Ludwig has also been dedicated to making the city of Vienna greener. He constantly invests in public transport and, this way, encourages people to switch to alternative forms of transport which is what makes a huge difference for the environment.
One of mayor Ludwig's huge plans is to achieve climate neutrality in Vienna by 2040. The mayor presented a strategy that identifies 100 actions to reach this goal. The individual steps of this strategy are divided into 11 areas which include energy, mobility, zero waste and circular economy, climate adaptation, digitalization and other.
