Construction sites in Munich: what will be done throughout 2021
Whether on the streets, in buildings or on public transport – there is a lot of construction going on in Munich all year round. Here is a selection of important construction sites for 2021:
Roads: Construction work on the Paul Heyse underpass
One of the most important road construction projects in 2021 is the work on the Paul-Heyse underpass and on Paul-Heyse-Straße. Among other things, new electricity and gas lines are being laid here, and the roadway, wall cladding and lighting are being modernized. Therefore, from January 20 to mid-September 2021, only single-lane operation is available in Paul-Heyse-Straße from Landwehrstraße and in the Paul-Heyse underpass in the north direction.
Construction work is also taking place on the tracks in Sonnenstraße, for which the tram service between Schwanthalerstraße and Sendlinger-Tor-Platz is expected to cease from March 2021.
In addition, the construction work in the Altstadtringtunnel, on Thomas-Wimmer-Ring and on Bahnhofsplatz continues.
2nd main line: giant crane at Marienhof

The work on the second main line will also continue in 2021 – perhaps the most visible symbol of this is the new mega crane at the Marienhof. It is 75 meters high and is 65 meters long. The crane can lift loads of up to 48 tons. It is needed for the construction of the new tunnel station at Marienhof. The excavation and production of the concrete cover is to start here in autumn.
Building: Gasteig’s interim quarters and Alte Akademie

One of the most spectacular “new buildings” is the Gasteig interim quarter, which is due to go into operation at the end of 2021. Since the Gasteig is being renovated on a large scale for several years, the interim quarter in Sendling houses, among other things, a philharmonic hall for up to 1,800 visitors.
The largest building project in the city, however, is the new criminal justice center , which is currently being built on Dachauer Strasse. When completed in 2024, it will house one of the largest courtrooms in Germany.
Another important project is the renovation of the old academy in Kaufingerstraße, for which the structural work is expected to start in May 2021. New sales, office and event space will be created here by 2023.
Underground: work on the Sendlinger Tor station continues

After the access to the mezzanine from Sonnenstrasse was completed in 2020, work is now being carried out on the opposite entrance. This means that the entrance and exit, which leads in the direction of Sendlinger Straße, is expected to be closed until the end of 2021.
The major project should be completed by 2023 and the Sendlinger Tor underground station will shine in a completely new light.
Housing construction: Green high-rise and former Bayern barracks

Work on one of the city’s most spectacular skyscrapers could begin in 2021. The high-rise at Arabellapark is to have a green facade on 16 floors and, in addition to apartments, it will also accommodate offices and restaurants.
Up to 15,000 people will live on the site of the former Bayern barracks and around 5,500 new apartments will be built on the 48-hectare area. Construction of the first 750 apartments will begin in 2021.
Hauptbahnhof: What is planned for 2021

The construction projects at the main train station will also continue at full speed in 2021: work on the new stop for the second main line at a depth of 40 meters will continue. On the surface, the tram stop at the station square is being renovated.
It is not yet possible to foresee when the construction work will be completely completed. The construction time for the new station building alone is estimated at 5.5 years, and around 3 years for the new Starnberg wing station.
Cycle paths in Munich: expansion of the network will be continued

The cycle path network in Munich will be expanded in 2021, so construction cycle paths have already been decided on Rosenheimer Straße between Lilienstraße and Am Lilienberg and in Zweibrückenstraße between Erhardt- / Steinsdorfstraße and Rumford- / Thierschstraße.
In addition, pop-up cycle paths are also to be set up again in 2021, for example in Elisenstrasse and Theresienstrasse.
