Lille furthers education equality with free school supplies and sustainability workshops

Lille continues to support young pupils with free school supplies for the third consecutive year.

Headed by Mayor of Lille Martine Aubry, city authorities pointed out that the programme ensures equal access to education.

Since 2021, Lille has been providing young pupils with all supplies needed for their classes except schoolbags and pencil cases.

City authorities noted that inflation and decline of purchasing power are sources of inequality, stressing that the programme ensures optimal learning conditions for each pupil.

As part of the programme, teachers provide their pupils with school supplies needed for their classes, with Lille footing the bill.

The city encourages teachers to choose supplies with a low environmental impact and plan their sustainable use, which raises awareness about environmental issues among pupils and helps teachers to identify and share best practices.

Waste is minimised through reuse and recycling, which is in line with Lille’s sustainable development and environmental transition plans.

This year’s budget for the programme has been increased slightly compared to 2022, with EUR 654,000 allocated for Lille, 100,000 for Lomme and 68,000 for Hellemmes.

As part of the programme, Lille is organising workshops to help residents customise and repair their schoolbags before the start of the new school year.
