Over 500 new homes and green areas planned in Barakaldo’s El Calero urbanisation project
Barakaldo has started the demolition of pavilions in Burtzeña neighbourhood, marking the start of the El Calero urbanisation project.
Mayor of Barakaldo Amaia del Campo reminded that residents of the neighbourhood fought for the project and added that she is happy to see it take off the ground.
“This is fantastic news,” she stressed and noted that more than 500 homes will be built and approximately 20,000 square metres of green areas developed.
Del Campo thanked the residents for their commitment and support, and pointed out that the project would not have been possible without it.
City authorities noted that roughly half of the new homes will be offered through subsidised housing programmes and added that a large area will be reserved for exercise equipment in the new park.
Demolition and removal of debris will be carried out in the coming weeks, with Barcelona stressing that the old Hoffmann kiln chimney will be preserved as homage to the industrial past of the neighbourhood.
Barcelona reminded that the El Calero project was approved in 2019, largely thanks to the neighbourhood’s support.
City authorities concluded that the project will expand the Burtzeña housing stock and provide new areas for exercise and socialisation, which will improve quality of life in the neighbourhood.
