Marseille pledges commitment to ecological restoration

Marseille reaffirmed its commitment to ecological restoration, which is at the top of the list of its priorities.

Under Mayor of Marseille Benoît Payan, city authorities stressed the importance of helping nature to return to Marseilles and improving biodiversity.

The process of urbanisation harms biodiversity as areas are paved and habitats are split and reduced to islands of vegetation, which is why Marseille is focusing on ecological restoration.

City authorities reminded that an unprecedented process of ecological restoration is underway as new trees and other types of vegetation are planted in schoolyards, parks, municipal gardens and other public areas.

The efforts are aimed at minimising negative effects of urbanisation and creating a green network in the city to help flora and fauna flourish in Marseille.

City authorities reminded that some areas have been de-paved to help manage surface runoff and increase biodiversity and pointed out that plant species were chosen depending on specifics of the areas where they were planted.

Marseille is implementing ecological restoration projects in cooperation with local communities, noting that it regularly holds consultations and organises workshops in neighbourhoods to help residents take part in decision-making.

City authorities reminded that the ecological restoration process started roughly two years ago and reiterated that Marseilles is fully committed.
