Linköping preparing air quality improvement action plan

News

Linköping is to prepare an action plan to improve air quality and present it to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency by November 2024.

Under Mayor of Linköping Lars Vikinge, the city recently completed an investigation into elevated levels of particulate air pollution in March.

Linköping authorities have been measuring particle pollution in Hamngatan since 2010 due to the street’s location and volume of traffic.

While particle pollution exceeded limits in March, nitrogen dioxide concentrations have not exceeded the maximum allowed value since the city built the measuring station.

City authorities stressed that the investigation points to very dry weather and heavy traffic as causes of elevated particulate pollution, adding that several cities in Sweden reported high pollution in the same period.

Niklas Eriksson, head of the urban environment department, reminded that it did not rain at all in March, pointing out that rain usually washes away dust and fine particles generated by traffic.

He reiterated that city authorities plant to present an action plan to prevent similar air pollution incidents in the future by late 2024, but stressed that some measures can be implemented immediately.

Eriksson pointed out that the city is examining options and will do its best to make sure the incident from March remains a one-off event.
