The French city of Montpellier has approved plans for a new express cycling network. The plan is an important component of Montpellier’s 2025 mobility strategy.

Mayor of Montpellier Michaël Delafosse stated on social media: ‘’The metropolis is thus equipped with a complete network of bus and tram lines, and soon bustrams and velolignes. We are thus enabling 90% of the inhabitants of Montpellier to have access to a public transport offer, proposing a serious alternative, to give everyone a choice in their mobility.’’

According to the mayor of the French city, the plan sets out the map and the timetable for the completion of the 235 km of cycling routes in Montpellier. 70% of it is set to be completed before 2026, so that the mobility alternatives can become available to the residents as soon as possible.

Other new mobility concepts are also being encouraged and promoted in Montpellier. For instance, free carpooling with Klaxit is being developed by the city in Southern France which would allow all residents, including those who live further from the center, to share their journey while earning money.

‘’By extending the €500 subsidy for the purchase of an EV (€1,000 for cycling professionals) until 31 December 2022, we are strongly encouraging our citizens to choose to cycle, for those who can, in order to reduce the number of cars to only what is necessary,’’ Mayor Delafosse further stated.

Mayor of Montpellier also stated that by the end of 2023, all residents of the metropolis would have access to free transportation.

‘’It is together, thanks to a well thought-out strategy on mobility, looking to the future, that we will take up the challenge of the century’’, mayor Delafosse concluded. (photo credit: pch vector/Freepik)
