News

Markéta Vaňková is a Czech politician and lawyer who has been serving as mayor of Brno since 2018. She was the representative of the South Moravian Region from 2016 to 2020 and representative of the Brno district since 2002. From 2006 to 2010, Vaňková was a member of the city council and between 2010 and 2014 she worked as a vacant representative of the city district for legislation and the environment.

Since the beginning of her mayoral term, mayor of Brno has been trying to make the city a lively and greener oase that offers a better quality of life for its citizens.

Her ambition for Brno is not to create a city of unrealistic visions and visualizations, but instead, Vaňková is working on projects that have a real chance of coming to life, and those that function properly.

She is also trying to start some projects which will renovate some parts of the city by making them more lively and modern. For example, The architecture studio A8000 and the City of Brno are creating a development concept that aims to transform the western part of the Brno heating plant into a smart urban district that will offer cultural facilities, employment and housing for about 600 people in just 10 minutes from the city center.

She is also planning on starting one of the largest strategic projects in the city, which consists of creating a multi-purpose arena with a capacity for up to 13,000 people. This project is important because the city of Brno as well as the entire region needs an arena. It will be a multifunctional facility for sports, cultural activities, and other large-scale public events. The construction should start this year. The building is already approved for construction and the project also includes the revitalization of the entire area where the project is planned.

This Arena project also includes the extension of the tram line, creation of 1,300 new parking spots and a cable car, but also the expansion of a part of the greater city expressway. (photo: Marketa Vankova official website)
