As a response to the climate crisis, cities across the globe are turning towards innovative solutions in order to fight climate change. In order to minimize the pollution to reduce CO2 emissions with the goal of much lower impact on the environment, cities are turning towards renewable energy.
Renewable energy derives from natural resources that replenish themselves in less than a human lifetime without depleting the planet’s resources. These resources, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, biomass and thermal energy are stored in the Earth’s crust and have the benefit of being available in one form or another nearly everywhere. Those are virtually inexhaustible and cause little or none climate and environmental damage which is why switching to renewable energy is becoming extremely important for cities and countries.
The city of Grenoble is one of the French cities which has made great progress in terms of becoming greener and using renewable energy. Grenoble is on a mission to gradually replace fossil fuels such as gas, gasoline, and fuel oil with renewable energies. To achieve this green goal, the city has planned a roadmap which includes reducing all energy consumption by 22% until the year 2030, boosting renewable and recovery energies by 35%, and reducing fossil energies by 30%.
To make this vision possible, the city of Grenoble has planned actions which include: making 4 new biomass heat networks, the renovation over 40.000 homes and detached houses, building a new biogas unit for food waste and an ambitious plan of passing the metropolis waste collection buses and trucks to biogas.
In 2005, Grenoble Alpes earned a title as the first metropolitan area in France to adopt a climate plan. The presence of large companies, particularly in hydroelectricity, is one of the main advantages why Grenoble Alpes play an important part in energy. Grenoble Alpes’ Metropolitan government has been dedicated to addressing the challenges associated with the energy transition and has committed itself to the development of renewable energies.
Grenoble is also one of the European Green Capitals 2022, thanks to its unwavering commitment to creating a healthier city for its citizens. The city earned this award because of many environmental policies including public transport, cycling, and encouraging local organic production of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Grenoble has also put in place urban policies to mitigate pollution and biodiversity loss, such as a 30km speed limit throughout the city, making it France’s largest low emission zone. The city continues with working towards zero pollution, climate neutrality, enhanced biodiversity protection and achieving a circular economy.
As one of the leaders in hydrogen technologies who has been dedicated to addressing the challenges associated with the energy transition, Grenoble has a great potential of reaching their green goals. For 2022, Grenoble plans to produce the equivalent of its inhabitants’ consumption in renewable, zero-carbon, zero-nuclear energy. (photo credit: janoon028/Freepik)
