Bonn is investing in urban greenery
The German city of Bonn has more than 125,000 trees which make it an above-average green city. But they also suffer particularly from the consequences of climate change, which is why Bonn is investing heavily in tree care and replacement planting, it was stated in a press release published by the city of Bonn.
Mayor of Bonn Katja Dörner stated: “Trees are a very important concern for the city: they bring greenery to the streets and ensure a pleasant stay. They are water reservoirs, air filters and provide shade on hot summer days and are therefore of particular value for the climate adaptation of our inner cities”.
Information on the subject of tree planting was presented during a planting campaign on Servatiusstraße in Bonn-Dottendorf. The city spent roughly 2.6 million euros planting 676 street trees between the winter of 2021 and the spring of 2022.
At the same time, 275 street trees that were affected by disease or in danger of falling had to be felled. That resulted in a positive balance of 401 new trees that found their place in this German city.
“Our priority is to take care of the street trees in Bonn in the best possible way and thus preserve them for as long as possible. But one thing is also clear: the climate crisis and the associated dry periods, pest infestation, but also the age of many street trees unfortunately make it unavoidable that damaged trees have to be felled again and again. Here we make sure that replacements are planted wherever possible,” mayor Dörner also stated.
For the replanting, the Office for the Environment and Urban Greenery generally chooses tree species that can cope well with the changing weather conditions, such as Norway maple, hackberry or Hungarian oak. The city is also testing new tree species such as white ash or the manna ash. (photo credit: Wikipedia)
