The first works officially started yesterday morning near the Eden cultural center.

As Charleroi mayor Paul Magnette recalled, this is in fact part B of the Charleroi District Créatif project: the one related to the urban renewal of the entire Upper Town which will completely reconfigure this part of Charleroi.

The renovation and revitalization of public spaces in the upper town represents a total budget of 36.5 million euros, 90% co-financed by the European Union and the Walloon Region.

Overall, the work will focus on Place Charles II, the historic heart of the city where the Town Hall and the Belfry of Charleroi are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO. It will be dedicated to pedestrians and the small streets surrounding the Town Hall will be renovated.

Furthermore, The Place du Manège will become greener and will allow the organization of various events. Rue Neuve and Rue de la Régence, streets that connect Place Charles II and Square du Monument, will be renovated.

Avenue de Waterloo, Avenue Henin and Square du Monument, which constitute a major axis of entry to the heart of the city, will be completely refurbished. The Monument will be preserved in a completely new scenography.

Boulevard Bertrand will be redeveloped to put traffic back in its center and widen the sidewalks to invite people to stroll, enlarge public spaces, improve soft mobility and rationalize parking.

This is the complete list of the renovated spaces: Place Charles II, square du Monument, place du Manège, boulevard Bertrand, boulevard Solvay, boulevard Roullier, “Roullier” tunnel, rue Neuve, rue de la Régence, crossroads of boulevard Janson with rue Neuve, la rue de la Régence and the Square du Monument, avenue de Waterloo, avenue Hénin, rue du Dauphin, rue du Beffroi and rue Turenne.

A particular communication effort is planned throughout the duration of the works via information sessions (when the “Covid” situation allows), site permanence, a  Construction Gazette”, mail, the press and the official bodies of the City Information Charleroi (Charleroi Magazine, website, Facebook page) .The Construction Gazette”, published at frequent intervals, will be the main communication medium in which one will be able to find detailed information about the site: phasing, type of work in progress, traffic plans … The site hotlines, weekly, will also respond directly to users’ questions.
