Major tree planting in Marseilles
Concerned about its environment and the preservation of its green areas, the City of Marseille, led by Mayor Michèle Rubirola is launching a major tree-planting operation on a 6 hectares located in the municipal natural area of Étoile, north of Marseille (13th arrondissement).
In the 1980s, the municipality carried out an experiment consisting in planting different species of trees on artificial soil made up of shredded household waste.
The results turned out to be mixed, in particular because of the unsuitability of the species chosen for the surrounding natural environment.
Today, the City of Marseille has begun a conversion of this plot by replacing these trees with local species such as Aleppo pines, oaks, and even strawberries.
This initiative, which will be spread over several years to cover the entire site, is being carried out in collaboration with the Lion’s Club and primary schools in Marseilles for the sake of environmental awareness and education.
During each operation, the children of two classes will plant a hundred plants provided by the Lion’s Club. For their part, the municipal services will ensure the optimal recovery of these young trees.
This ambitious project, which is fully in line with the priorities of the municipality, also makes it possible to fight against the foreseeable consequences of global warming.
