As part of its policy of implementing new modes of transport that respect the environment, the City of Liège is completing its study on the Liège cable car project. It is one of the metropolitan projects that has been greatly approved by the people of Liège as part of the Liège 2025 city project.
The cable car transport would start from the Esplanade Saint-Léonard (near a tram station) and would land at the Citadel.
This ecological means of transport will strengthen the connection with the tram while ensuring the preservation and enhancement of this large urban green space when it is crossed. The cable car will also guarantee accessibility for residents and walkers to a beautiful green area on the edge of the historic heart. But also, it will become an additional tourist asset for Liège.
According to the studies as well as to the mobility plan of the CHR, a flow of 1250 people / hour / direction and journey time of about 3 minutes (all operations included) will be possible for the cable car.
A technical and financial pre-feasibility study was carried out in 2018 by the MDP consulting & Engineering office, following which, Liège considered it necessary to continue the mission of defining the route identified as optimal for the implementation of cable transport on his territory.
This additional analysis was carried out again by the MDP office during the year 2020. The City of Liège now has a more precise longitudinal profile of the route, the locations recommended for the infrastructures (stations and pylons), recommended technologies, a refined estimate of the budget, but also the constraints to be overcome. Moreover, the perimeter of the project having now been clearly identified, the various departments of the City are integrating the cable car into current and future projects and studies.
Consequently, 100,000 € of the municipal budget is allocated for the pursuit of studies relating to this metropolitan project through its legal-administrative component. The objective is to determine the best solution for operating the cable car, to identify and initiate the administrative procedures related to the overview of the dwellings along the route, those related to the heritage or to the concessionaires of the Saint-Georges block and to identify funding possibilities.
