Coventry is stepping into the future: the Air One project
By 2030, 60% of the world’s population will be urban. Because of this significant population growth, there will be a higher need for new, innovative mobility options as ground infrastructure becomes increasingly congested.
This is why many cities are trying to think of new mobility options which will make life simpler, and at the same time, they are trying to come up with options that would be environmentally friendly and green. It is important to provide people with a safe, sustainable, and convenient solutions. One of those could be Urban air mobility.
Urban air mobility leverages the sky to better link people to cities and regions, giving them more possibilities to connect. Some cities already started projects in addition to making this possible and usable for the people.
Construction of the Air One began in Coventry, UK in February this year. This way, the city became one of the leading cities when it comes to transport innovations.
Air-One site is the world’s first fully-operational hub for eVTOL aircraft. The site has been showcased on 25th April in the Coventry City Center, which is 2021 UK City of Culture, together with showcasing how sustainable urban air mobility can reduce congestion, cut air pollution, and decarbonize transport while providing seamless passenger journeys and deliveries.
The city of Coventry was chosen for this project because it is an important historic hub for the automobile and aerospace industry located in the heart of the UK. Coventry also has many people with skills that can support the R&D and advanced manufacturing industries of the future.
This project is created by the Urban-Air Port Limited, a British startup, which is developing a fully autonomous zero-emission ground infrastructure for new forms of sustainable urban air transport such as air taxis and autonomous delivery drones, with a mission to remove the largest single constraint to sustainable air mobility, ground infrastructure.
The main aim of the company is to create a zero-emission-mobility ecosystem in the city that will significantly cut congestion and air pollution from passenger and cargo transport and also provide a new and modern form of transport that sets a great example for other cities.
