Youth input into Dublin’s city planning prioritises parks and cycle lanes

A survey of young people in Dublin showed that they would like to see more parks, cycle lanes and youth centres in the city.

City authorities noted that the survey was conducted as part of a forum that Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy hosted at the Mansion House.

Dublin asked young people for their input on what they like about the city, what they would like to see more of and what they would change to make the city more welcoming to the cohort.

“It’s so important that young people have a voice and that we listen to them,” Conroy stressed and added “youth is one of the themes of my term in office and I’m hoping we can now establish a focus group of these young people to work with the City Council in the future on some of these ideas.”

After cycle lanes, parks and youth centres, most popular requests included more sports centres, skate parks, picnic tables, mixed schools, swimming areas and cinemas.

Earlier this month, Conroy signed the declaration at the Velo-city conference in Leipzig, committing to make cycling “a fully-fledged mode of transport accessible to all.”

“I am delighted to sign this declaration on behalf of the citizens of Dublin… cycling is one of the healthiest, cleanest and cost-effective modes of transport out there,” she noted in Leipzig and called on “all Dubliners to get on their bike.”
