Tallinn planns to invest millions in sports next year
Tallinn is planning to invest nearly EUR 32 million in sports next year, according to the draft 2023 budget.
Under Mayor of Tallinn Mihhail Kõlvart, the city is planning to spend roughly EUR 20.3 million on operational expenditures in sports and new investments worth approximately 11.4 million.
The city invested some EUR 8.4 million in new sports facilities in 2022, with Deputy Mayor Vadim Belobrovtsev stressing that Tallinn will be the EU Capital of Sports in 2025 and is the heart of Estonia’s sports life.
“We organize a large number of high-level competitions, thousands of young athletes train in various clubs and tens of thousands are involved in sports,” he pointed out and added that Tallinn still wants to invest more in sports.
Belobrovtsev noted that city authorities want to motivate residents to take up physical activities and adopt a healthier lifestyle, stressing that all residents should be physically active.
On average, approximately 50% of residents exercise regularly, with Tallinn authorities planning to push the figure to 65% by 2035.
To achieve this, the city will coordinate with local and national sports organisations to develop, organise and support sporting activities.
Tallinn authorities announced plans to support sports associations and projects, both competitive and recreational, stressing that the move will help to improve health.
“The biggest investment in the sports sector next year will be the complete renovation of the Tallinn Sports Hall, which started this year,” Belobrovtsev pointed out and concluded that the project should be completed next year.
