Tallinn invites residents to join a green revolution with community garden project
Tallinn has announced a community garden project to be built on Putukaväil green corridor, noting that the project will be presented to residents in the coming days.
City authorities headed by Mayor of Tallinn Mihhail Kõlvart invited residents to attend the presentation on Tuesday, 21 March, at the North Tallinn community centre.
The planned community garden would be built on approximately 3,000 square metres and include raised beds and a greenhouse as well as an area for outdoor events, seating areas and a shelter.
City authorities stressed the importance of creating a climate to facilitate planning of community events and conducting outdoor education, noting that experience so far shows that urban gardening has positive effects on participants and the city as a whole.
Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet pointed out that community gardens make the public space more active, promote neighbourly and environmentally friendly ways of thinking and help to make the city greener.
He noted that urban gardening is a growing trend and concluded that Tallinn’s experiences can help other cities to implement similar projects.
City authorities reminded that Tallinn already launched approximately 30 community gardens, with more than 2,500 residents cultivating fruits and vegetables there.
Tallinn pointed out that urban gardens have environmental as well as social benefits and concluded that the project will be co-financed through EU funds.
