News

The city of Sofia, led by the mayor Yordanka Fandakova, will undergo some major reconstructions on the city’s subway system which will make the city’s transportation much better and easier for all citizens but also the tourists.

The renovation is financed by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility which is planning to invest 112.5 million euro in this big and helpful project.

It is announced that the construction of a three-kilometer section of Sofia’s subway line 3 is planned to start in March or April, and it is expected to be finished by the end of 2025.

The Sofia subway system currently comprises four lines with 52 km of tracks and 47 stations. Last year, Sofia’s metro system operator Metropoliten has signed a 38.4 million euro contract with local construction company Trace Group Hold for an expansion of the underground railway system in the Bulgarian capital which is a very helpful and meaningful project for all the citizens.

Last year, mayor of Sofia Yordanka Fandakova spoke about the projects that are planned for the city metro system and she said that Sofia municipality is investing over 400 million levs of its funds in a project for expansion of the subway network. The 360 million levs penciled in for the purpose in the EU-funded national recovery and resilience plan of Bulgaria cover only 47% of the value of the project for the construction of two new subway sections with a total length of 9 km.

These major projects are all a part of Bulgaria’s Recovery and Sustainability Plan for overcoming the covid crisis. This project will make Sofia’s subway system much safer and more reliable, but it will also have a positive effect on savings in energy and overall environment protection. (photo credit: Facebook.
